Many neighborhoods in Pomona are bordered by parks. Greenbelts such as Ganesha Park, King Park and Palomares Park provide an oasis of tranquility to city residents. Washington Park and Westmont Park also feature a Community Center. The Fairplex Exposition Center in Pomona is also home to the annual Los Angeles County Fair, an extravaganza, which attracts more than 1.3 million visitors each September.
The Gabrielenos Indians were the first occupants of the valley, which became Pomona. In the 1700s, it was know as Rancho San Jose and then the Mission San Gabriel grazing lands. But after Don Ignacio Palomares and Don Ricardo Vejar were granted rights to the land in 1837, it was passed from person to person until Louis Phillips sold 5,600 acres to a group of speculators. These men named the area "Pomona" and vineyards flourished there in the late 1800s. Later, citrus orchards and olive groves replaced the vineyards as the agricultural backbone of the area. Several of the area's first industrial enterprises, such as, Phillip's Land and Cattle Company, Pomona Brick and the law firm of Nichols, Stead, Boileau and Kostoff, are still operating today. However, Pomona currently leads the valley in several major economic categories including retail sales and electronic software. Major area employers are Lockheed-Martin Electro-Optical, ITT Continental Baking, Verizon, Rockwell Collins, Inc., and Pioneer Electronics. Pomona is proud of its cultural heritage and its history can be traced through several area museums such as La Casa Primera de Rancho San Jose and Palomares Adobe. Other nearby cultural venues includes Planes of Fame Air Museum, Route 66 Territory Museum, Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden, Van Ness Water Gardens and Bollinger Candlelight Pavilion. Cal Poly University features the Pomona Performing Arts and the Pomona College Orchestra is an important tradition at the Claremont Colleges. Modern Pomona is a multi-cultural city with progressive citizens and town revitalization projects; outstanding educational opportunities and affordable housing; an agricultural background and a new spirit of entrepreneurial leadership and innovation; a historic past coupled with a promising future. |
